Some trees should not be climbed

Dead, storm-damaged, diseased or structurally doubtful trees are exactly the ones that need work, and exactly the ones a climber should not be in. A cherry picker gives the tree surgeon a stable platform beside the timber instead of a rope in it: the dismantle proceeds section by section, rigged down or free-dropped into a clear zone, with the platform repositioned as the crown comes down. For Teesside's mature garden trees after every winter storm, it is increasingly the standard approach.

Where platform tree work wins

Dead or dying trees: ash dieback and storm-killed timber that cannot safely take a climber's anchors. Trees over structures: crowns above conservatories, garages and greenhouses where lowering needs precise positioning. Tight gardens: no room for a tower, lawns and planting that scaffold would wreck. Roadside and boundary trees: fast setup, minimal footprint, out of the way by the end of the day.

Site and awkward-access work

The same machines cover the odd jobs that defeat ladders and towers: clearing vegetation from commercial elevations, reaching into courtyards and light wells, inspection and maintenance on tanks, silos and canopies, and camera or survey work at height. If it is above ladder height and below 26 metres, a boom is usually the sensible answer.

Booking it properly
